Cognitive Scope
The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Clinic was established according to the 459/87 presidential decree (Government Gazette 215/08. 12. 1987) and is located in the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis (4th Ministerial Decision 29261/03 Government Gazette 750/ 11.06.2003). The Clinic is part of the Surgical Department of DUTH (B1/119259/ 07.12.2004) and caters to the educational, research and clinical needs in the field of Otorhinolaryngology.
Aims and Objectives
- The various aims of the ENT Clinic include:
- Satisfying the educational and research needs of the Department of Medicine alongside other Departments of the Democritus University of Thrace both in undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Otorhinolaryngology.
- Providing tertiary care clinical services to patients with otorhinolaryngological diseases and problems in the head and neck area, at emergency levels as well as surgery by performing operations incorporating the entire range of ENT specialty.
- The doctors, nurses and other health sector officials’ specialty along with their continuous education and training.
- Implementing clinical, experimental and research programs aiming to the study and the general production of new knowledge regarding the pathogenesis-pathophysiology, the prevention and the treatment of otorhinolaryngological diseases as well as the exploration of new technical and healing methods.
- Cooperating and scientific knowledge exchanging with other clinics and laboratories, scientific companies, other academic institutions both in Greece and abroad, the partnership with international organizations for research and educational programs and general clinical activities related to the clinic’s scientific subjects.
- Organizing seminars, symposia, conferences and lectures in order to educate the medical and other staff of the Clinic, the rest of the hospital clinics and other nursing institutions.
- Catering for the various social needs whenever specific assistance is requested in issues the Clinic deals with.
- The Clinic work is divided in educational, research and clinical.
B1. The educational project includes:
- Practical and theoretical training of the students of the Department of the Medicine by DUTH Faculty and research members according to the curriculum.
- Training of the interns in order to acquire the Otorhinolaryngology specialty along with the postgraduate training of both the interns and specialist doctors in the process of ongoing medical education, as well as the training of other health officials. The education is divided in practical and theoretical. The practical aims to gain experience in diagnostic and therapeutic treatment while the theoretical training includes both clinical and theoretical courses, lectures by Faculty members and invited speakers, case and clinical-pathological discussions, bibliographic information and educational conferences, roundtables and seminars.
- Doctoral and postgraduate dissertations elaboration along with other scientific paper research after a decree of the Medical School.
- Training of the nursing staff of the hospital alongside the staff of other hospitals
- Postgraduate education with postgraduate programs while, at the same time, the participation of Clinic doctors in both Panhellenic and International conferences, symposia, surgical seminars, publication of works in journals in Greece and abroad and production of basic and clinical research.
B2. The Clinical research work includes the administration and publication of applied clinical and experimental studies independently or in collaboration with other Faculty members or researchers as well as undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral dissertations. The research work is supervised by the Chair of the Clinic.
B3. The Clinical work incorporates clinical diagnosis, paraclinical investigation, treatment and overall patient care. The Faculty members and other doctors visit the patients to get informed, complete, change or cease the hospitalization or about laboratory and clinical examinations. It is during these visits that diagnostic and therapeutic problems of interest are also being discussed. The services are diagnostic and therapeutic (surgical or conservative) covering the entire range of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery employing contemporary means and techniques. All diagnostic and therapeutic handlings and decisions should conform to scientific rules and constitute the application of proven or internationally accepted practices.
